Portsmouth NH Apartment/Condo Scam

This is an old post/draft but for some reason I forgot to hit publish, so just in case, here it is!

It’s been a while folks, but now that I am searching for apartments again, I thought I’d keep the public filled in on what I can! There was a 77 Hanover Street Condo for $700, I’ve even seen them for $600 or even under $1000. Be diligent, these condos are brand new and should not cost less then $1500-ish. The Unit number should be provided since there are a whole building full of condos. The buildings website has its own realtor, so be cautious and check with her about any available ads!

The following is the first email I received from this contact on craigslist:

[Hello,
Thanks for taking the time to look at my property. My name is Lynda Bannett, I’m 43 years old,I’m the owner of this condo(1 bedrooms,1bathrooms, 900 square footage). It’s located in 77 Hanover St , Portsmouth , NH 03801 .The unit is equipped with recessed lighting, central air and heat, the condo come with two parking spots,a storage unit where you can deposit my furniture (if you don’t like it and you want use your furniture),there is also a linen closet, and most importantly, a new front loading stacked washer and drier.Pets allowed.I’ve moved to United Kingdom with my job and decided to rent it because the rent is very expensive here. The price is so low because I’m here and is very hard to find a tenant.I can rent you the condo for min. 1 month and max. 6 years(or more).I really want to find a good and responsible tenant for it, and I hope that you can send me some personal information about yourself. The rent for whole the condo for 1 month is $700.00 including all utilities(water, electricity, internet, cable, parking , airconditioning, fireplace, dishwasher, garbage) and the security deposit is $700.00 (you’ll get the deposit back at your departure-or you can use it to pay your last month of rent) and I want to receive the money monthly in my bank account. You can move in the condo in the same day when you receive the keys. The only problem is that I`m the only person who has the keys and I have nobody in United States that could show you the condo. In order to check it, see if you like it(I’m sure that you’ll love it), you need to receive the keys and the contract.
If you want to rent the condo, please e-mail me back and I will explain you how the payment and shipping will take place!

Here are a few pictures:

Have a nice day]

Not being able to see the condo before getting the keys and contract seemed sketchy; however through a false hope and a slight investigative itch, I persisted to ask questions and find out steps for payment “she” replied with this:

[ Thank you for your reply.
Before going further with anything I must tell you that for payments I will use the eBay Company, they will secure the transaction of payments. I will open a CASE ID# at eBay Company for this transaction and I will give them your full name, shipping info, phone# and indicate you as my tenant. After that, they will contact you with the payment details, and they will ask you to send them a refundable deposit, $1,400.00 in 24 hours(the money will be for the first month of rent + the security deposit). After they receive your deposit, they will notify me immediately to start the shipping of the keys and the contract. You will receive a  tracking number in max 24 hours after they receive your deposit. The keys will reach to you in 3-4 days. After you’ll receive the keys and the contract, the 14 days of inspection period will start( you’ll have 14 days to see the condo, read the contract, decide if you keep the condo or not). After the inspection you will contact them and tell your decision: TAKE THE CONDO or NOT TAKE THE CONDO! In case you’ll take it you’ll have to send them a copy of the contract signed by you and they will release the money to me, if not you’ll have to send them the contract unsigned and they will refund your money($1,400.00), the contract and the keys will be shipped back at my expenses! I will pay the shipping and you’ll have to pay the money transfer fee for the refundable deposit.
Once again:
1. If you have the money $1,400.00 and if you want to rent it send me your full name, your shipping address and your phone#
2. I will open a CASE ID# at eBay Company for this transaction , and I will give them your info, and indicate you as my tenant.
3. After that, they will contact you with the payment details(you’ll have to send them $1,400.00 via money transfer in the next 24 hours-you’ll need cash)
4. After they receive your deposit, they will notify me immediately to start the shipping, and you will receive a  tracking number in max 24 hours after they receive your deposit.
5.From the moment you receive the keys the 14 days inspection period will start.I will make the transaction only in this way so if you have the money and if you want to rent my condo send me your full name, your shipping address, your phone# and I’ll start the procedure.

Thanks]

Once I replied to this email with a simple “what unit number is this?”, she has not gotten back to me. I had searched online the address and saw they all had unit numbers. If this person does get back to me, I will update, but thus far, responding each following day and then stopping, is quite suspicious, not to mention the add is no longer on craigslist.

Beware folks of this name: Lynda Bannett and this email : hampshirelb1@hotmail.com   and always be thorough with your background searches!!! Good Luck!

Pet Sitter Scams

I may not get to write often, but when it comes to catching a scammer and warning others, I make it a point to share my findings.

I have a membership on care.com. Please do not misunderstand, care.com is not affiliated with any of these scammers, they are a wonderful and reliable, trustworthy website and company. It is only the fact that I have the membership, that I didn’t initially question being contacted for a local pet sitting job.

Occasionally I would get a text that someone in my area was looking for a pet sitter, and it would provide a contact email address. For instance: “New pet sitting job in your area. Please contact _________@_____.com”

This time, I wrote back, since I had recently updated my care.com information.

The scammer email associated with it was christinafarley@outlook.com

We corresponded back and forth, twice and since it’s the web I didn’t (and am careful to never) disclose much information.

The mentioning of specific dates were a red flag, needing me a few weeks before their arrival, when July is already almost half over and I wouldn’t be around tis August…?

Not answering directly about the dogs being safe with my son, having mentioned being pregnant, she would have made sure to iterate the point if she were real. 😉

I will copy-paste the entire email conversation below: Keep in mind I didn’t want to alert the scammer that I was on to them, so I kept it professional, while I sent their email address to the proper authorities. See bottom of post for information. 🙂

Hello Christina,

I apologize, but I am only able to start care in August, and since you need someone to start before the arrival of the dogs and yourselves, I won’t be of much help.

Best of luck!

Sonja

 Hello Again,

Thanks for your reply, There will be no problem working with us.We will be living in Franklin, My family and I would be moving into town on the 29th of July, but the dogs will be arriving earlier by the 27th. However, for the first few weeks, what we require from you is light housekeeping & preparation for our arrival. So when will it be convenient for you to start?

My husband will instruct his financial clerk to make out a check to you before our arrival. You’ll receive a Cashier’s check from which you will deduct your upfront payment for the first week and the remaining funds will be used to buy the Dog foods, shampoo and other things needed for the dogs and house equipment. We’re willing to pay $300 weekly.

The real estate agent will be instructed to release the keys of our apartment and address to you via mail or pick up, whichever one is convenient for you. This will enable you to do all the necessary preparation before the arrival of our Dogs. We need you to help us get the shopping and preparation done before they arrive so that you wont have to start running around when they arrive. We’ll reimburse your cost of transportation.

Please forward the following information to me to send to the financial Clerk

Full Name:
Full address with zip code & Apt Number:

All I need from you is total honesty and sincerity. I know you will be committed to the works that are required from you. You will also have a nice time working with us.

Hello Christina,
I want to make sure Im understanding you correctly.
You need someone for a few hours at a time, a few days a week to care for, feed, bath, walk and play with the dogs and do some housekeeping? That would suit me just fine.
I live near (old) downtown Franklin. I am a stay at home mom to a 16 mo boy, Ethan. My schedule is very flexible, I have time in the morning between 7 & 10 and again from 12-4. I love animals, my son does too although we dont have a dog as our apartment is too small. We have a deaf cat named Benson.
I would be bringing my son with me, if that is acceptabe for you. Are your babies ok with human babies?
I am out of town for about 10 days this month. I would be able to begin in August, when are your boys arriving?
I look forward to hearing from you,
Sonja

Hello,

I’m Christina and my husband’s name is Peter. We are couple of 5 years and we need a Caregiver for our two dogs, Butch and Jasper. My husband and I are moving into town. He just got promoted and transferred from his place of work.

We need someone we can entrust our dogs with, a competent person that will help look after them to make sure they receive the best possible care. My husband is very busy with his work schedule and I’m 7 months pregnant. It’s our first child and Peter & I want everything to go smoothly till I put to bed. Our furry babies are friendly, Butch is quite big, and he is a retriever. We got him from London and he is considered our “first child”, Jasper is a German Shepard he is 4 years and some months old, he’s friendly and loves to play around the house. Lol… “Our second child”

We need someone that’s mature, loves dogs, reliable and punctual. Duties include: Helping with care, meal preparation, bathing & laundry, light housekeeping and providing companionship as well as taking them for walk.

Butch & Jasper are well trained and won’t give you any problem. We will be happy if you would love them like we do they are quite adorable, Our dogs will be arriving before us and my husband requests to pay you to secure your service before our arrival as well as for you to get some dog foods, shampoo and other things needed in the house.

You will be working 2-3days a week on a flexible casual part-time basis excluding Sundays for three hours minimum. We prefer you look after them at our place.

Where in the city do you reside, so we can calculate the transportation cost if needed?

I will be waiting to hear from you.

Regards,
Christina Farley

When wanting to report phishing and scam emails, refer to the below information from Consumer Information:

Report phishing emails and texts.

  • Forward phishing emails to spam@uce.gov – and to the organization impersonated in the email. Your report is most effective when you include the full email header, but most email programs hide this information. To ensure the header is included, search the name of your email service with “full email header” into your favorite search engine.
  • File a report with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov/complaint.
  • Visit Identitytheft.gov. Victims of phishing could become victims of identity theft; there are steps you can take to minimize your risk.
  • You can also report phishing email to reportphishing@apwg.org. The Anti-Phishing Working Group – which includes ISPs, security vendors, financial institutions and law enforcement agencies – uses these reports to fight phishing.

I hope this blog has helped to prevent future scams from this and other email addresses alike.

Stay safe!

New Adventure

I am going to do my best to no longer make promises about finishing a certain project. In the last year:

I was pregnant and gave birth to my son, Ethan Philip Frost.

halloween-1

I got engaged to my love, Adam Frost

Moved to Franklin, TN for a great career opportunity for Adam

Finally got my own domain and digital portfolio

It doesn’t seem like much but the first thing on the list, as I’m sure many of you can attest, has taken up most of my time and energy. I plan to achieve my goals in becoming a photographer for my main source of income and have added being a great mom and supportive and positive fiance.

Bring on the new adventures!

I hope to be able to update this blog more often with photos of life and business achievements, but we’ll see whats possible as the days go on!

I hope my fellow photo/journalism bloggers and readers have been well.

Today marks the day…

It has been one year and a week to the day since my return home after my 3 month tour of Europe.

I am just finally getting my gifts to people and am getting to a place of feeling serene enough to get my blog of my journal complete. Photos were shared, but places, foods, sounds and smells were not and neither was my emotional growth that I feel is very important.

My Resolution for 2015 is to write my blog on my day by day journal entries from my trip. Include my photos and links to the people, places and suggestions I have.

I had heard from so many of my friends and family that they felt they were there with me and that was my goal. So many people won’t or can’t do that trip. I want to share more in depth my experience leading to, during and the emotional growth after my backpacking trip. I will post links on Facebook and email those whom I have for contacts that I had stayed with or met along the way.

I’m very excited to get this done and to hopefully help any other person going through the emotional turmoil that lead to my trip and consequently the great feeling that was my achieving personal freedom.

The beginning of my journey.
The beginning of my journey.

Life Change

There have been many changes in my life in the last 6 months. Realizations, love, loss, celebration, achievements, set backs and new friends and family. All of these steps have led me closer to who I will be for the rest of my life. Since I was young, I have wanted to travel.

There are many places on this list, but I have to start somewhere, so I booked my trip to Europe! September 28th, I am flying to Oslo, Norway and on December 23rd I am flying back to Boston from Madrid, Spain. I have posted on facebook, and I plan on using this blog for now as a means to keep friends and family update on my travel plans!

This trip will expand my view on life and force me to view the world through a wide angle lens so to speak. I plan on taking what I learn from this trip and allowing myself to grow into a better person. I hope to share my experience through photos, laughter with strangers, stories with friends and hugs for loved ones. Please wish me luck and if you would like to donate to my fund, feel free. I will not ask it of anyone that can not help. Please just know that I do appreciate any sort of help even if it just a tip or a name to look up!

You can donate here!

Sonja Lea Photography

Last year, I had my first paid photography experience. I was and assistant photographer for the Jumper Classic in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. I shot multiple candid photos of the children’s corner, VIP sections, contests, vendor tents and press photos. I worked under the company Flashpoint Photography. I am very grateful and honored to say that I am getting the same opportunity this year, as one step up in the photography spectrum. I will be shooting the jumpers and their horses. I am pleased to say however, that I will be shooting for the woman who got me the job last year, Tammy Hardy!!

I have also taken the job as the wedding photographer for two weddings of close friends of my siblings. For no charge but at no expense of my own. I am doing these two for no charge only, and no others so I can build my portfolio and work on starting my business! I am also in the process of making a pricing sheet, which I know will change over time. I am hoping to book another wedding for this year…paid! With all this activity in my soon-to-be career, I have felt very inspired to get things going despite the awful economy.

I hope that if you are reading this, you can take a moment to check out my facebook page. The more people who now about it the better. My own web page will come soon enough, but until I have a steady flow of income, facebook will have to do! Thanks for reading and keep at your dreams, things do turn around eventually!

Marine Cruelty and Public Expression

I never understood why people would harm an animal; they are defenseless and vulnerable. Not that I want people to see the event, but this video is vital to the seriousness of this act. One marine has clearly shown the world how he has chosen to represent himself as a person of the U.S. military. What kind of sick person kills something so innocent, and not only that, he videotaped it! I am glad the act was witnessed, so he does not go unpunished. But it is sad to me that now the marines are going to be stereotyped more so than before. This one marine, if we shall even call him that, has tainted the views of many Americans with this act of cruelness. I do not know what sort of punishment is in hold for this man, but I hope it is enough to alter any future decisions of animal cruelty made by military personnel.

The public deserves the right to express themselves about this horrific incident. If anyone should like to contact the Marines Public Affairs, his name is Major General Robert E. Milstead, Jr, director of public affairs, and this is his email address: robert.milstead@usmc.mil. These specifics were derived from a blog written by the ASPCA.
